Job Summary
The R&D Analytical Chemist is an innovative problem-solver who enjoys tackling complex challenges. They are persistent in overcoming obstacles and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to develop deep scientific understanding across our products and processes. The R&D Analytical Chemist uses their expertise in chemistry to apply standard methods to new problems and uses statistical analysis of the data to provide objective evidence for new discoveries and insightful recommendations. They communicate effectively with technical peers and stakeholders inside and outside of the organization and stay informed of industry research activities to create better analytical models and continuously generate improved scientific understanding within the company.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Uses knowledge of chemistry, physics, and materials science to solve problems.
  • Characterizes materials using analytical equipment for surface area analysis, spectrometry, chromatography, particle size analysis, and mechanical testing.  Maintains test equipment and makes recommendations for additional test capabilities.
  • Uses statistics and data visualization to identify and communicate trends
  • Effectively utilizes technicians and interns to help accomplish objectives.
  • Researches, identifies, and understands key product and process parameters.
  • Supports program engineers with development of project plans and technical cost estimates, evaluation of alternatives, risk management, cost-performance trade-offs, analysis of data, status updates and presentations at customer reviews.
  • Provides guidance to project and manufacturing engineer(s) as necessary, on areas including but not limited to, variability reduction, failure analysis, product performance, desirable process characteristics, and standard work.
  • Audits and generates standard process instructions and process manuals for analysis techniques and provides training to engineers, operators and technicians on the documented procedures.
  • Supports business development efforts both through building relationships and acquiring funding for development efforts and in preparation of quotes and proposals.
  • Maintains the highest ethical standards, even when challenged from above.
  • Understands and live by Armtec’s ethics and business conduct policies.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated scientific research expertise and experience in the areas method development and multivariate analysis.  Experience with energetic materials, fibrous materials, and metal powders is a plus.  Armtec’s products include molded fiber technology and pyrophoric iron technology.
  • Strong understanding and experience with scientific and engineering fundamentals as well as new product development and introduction.
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to develop numerical models for statistical analysis of complex systems using platforms such as R, python, or C++.
  • Good troubleshooting and failure analysis skills, including design of experiments supported with statistical analysis.
  • Strong presentation preparation and delivery skills with various audiences such as the government, prime and subcontractors.
  • Must be proficient with, Microsoft word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must be dependable, responsible, and accurate and have the ability to deal with people effectively.
  • Excellent communication and relationship skills with Senior Leadership, Program Management, Customers and engineering team members.
  • Ability to travel as necessary to perform job duties (up to 25%).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Government security clearance at the appropriate level. Prefer current active or prior demonstrated possession of US Gov’t security clearance.

Education/Previous Experience Requirements
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

  • MS or PhD in a related technical field with 0-5 yrs. of experience
